Drug Rehab: Treatment Programs for Drug Addiction

There was a time when drug rehab programs addressed only the physiological part of addiction and not the psychological dimensions of addiction. This situation has now changed. These days treatment programs are many. And for good measure, they assist those who are victims of drug addiction to recover.

The drug rehab treatment programs now aim to heal the mind in addition to the body. Drug addiction is no longer understood merely as an affliction of the body causing the body to crave for the drugs. It is now well understood that the mind is also subjugated making the addict to believe in the drug. This control over the mind also inhibits complete recovery from addiction.

Drug addiction is treated in rehab centers that have come up where the addict is admitted as an in-patient. There are a variety of treatment programs. The rehab centers are most often located in serene surroundings that are spacious enough for the in-patients to move about and also provided with the atmosphere for them to reflect upon. Skills to cope up with the problem are offered as part of the treatment and rehabilitation. You are also taught to do things to ensure that you manage similar situations that you were in when you were actually induced to take drugs.

A number of different types of therapies are available at the rehab centers. These include one-to-one individual therapy, counseling of the family and group therapy. These varieties of therapies address various features or dimensions of your addiction.

A standard intervention in these rehab centers is detoxification which is carried out by medical personnel. The body reacts, often in difficult ways, when the drugs are withdrawn from your body. The symptoms of withdrawal require to be managed. The medical personnel assist you to cope up with the withdrawal symptoms as comfortably as is feasible.

The drug rehab centers also provide out-patient service with programs designed accordingly. The program resembles the 12 step programs as is found in Alcoholics Anonymous. There are group discussions and meetings where you participate, talk and discuss. These help you to deal with your problems. It also helps others to deal with their problems.

The drug addiction treatment programs are quite useful. Taking full advantage of the program also requires your firm resolve to go through the complete treatment. It also requires your solid determination not to have a relapse and get back to taking drugs. The 12 steps program ensures support from others who too, like you, have addiction problems. The program also provides effective tools for you to use to combat temptation to the drugs.

But you need to completely commit yourself to the treatment when you opt for the out-patient program. Though you wish to get free of the drug to which you have become addicted to, yet there are times when you may be overwhelmed with the intense urge to take the drug. This is especially so during withdrawal. In such instances and particularly where drug use is involved, resorting to a rehab centre is recommended.

There have been substantial changes in the treatment programs for drug addiction in the recent decades. In addition, the social disgrace associated with admission to drug rehab clinics for addiction problems is as good as gone. Gone are the days when addiction was seen as an unmanageable problem. You know that there exist a number of treatments to treat drug addiction of your loved ones. Getting back to a somber and fresh life is now possible.
